Using Water from Lake to Water My Grass BUT....
I made a mistake and purchased two of these adapters when I purchased a 1.6 hp garden water pump which I use to suck water from a lake to water my grass. It was a mistake because you cannot use this adapter (or any adapter) on the "intake" side of the pump and you cannot use a garden hose (which is not a reinforced hose and not the correct diameter) as it will collapse inward (much like sucking a straw too hard while drinking soda). The diameter of a garden hose is too small for an intake hose and will not supply enough water to the pump and so the pump will not work. The hose will collapse inward and the water will just trickle out of the output side of the pump. So since a garden hose will not work, you do not need this reducer/adapter for the intake side of the pump. What you do need to use for the intake side of the pump is a sump pump hose which already is NPT (National Pipe Thread) and is the same diameter as the pump intake side valve so it does not need this or any other adapter. A sump pump hose will fit perfectly and will work great without any adapter. So if you purchased a water pump, you cannot use a garden hose as your intake hose so don’t waste your time or money trying. I tried it and it doesn't work. Just buy a sump pump hose for your intake hose. Also, for a 1.6hp pump the sump pump cannot be located more than 10 feet from your lake/water source. If it is located beyond 10 feet, the pump will not have enough "draw" or suction. So you need to locate your pump so that it is at the most 10 feet from your lake/water source. So buy your sump pump hose no more than 10 feet long. The cheapest sump pump hose (10 feet) I found was $29.00 from tractor supply. Regards using this adapter on your “output” side of the pump, absolutely. If you’re pump is National Pipe Thread (NPT) on intake and output sides, which most pumps are, you will need this adapter. But again, just on the output side. So, the way it will work is the larger diameter input (sump pump hose) will supply more than enough water to the pump which will push it through the smaller diameter garden house which will raise the water pressure enough to allow you to use a sprinkler or nozzle at the end of your output hose. It also provides enough pressure so that you can use up to at least 150 feet of output garden hose. I was able to water my grass up to at least 150 feet from the pump. So buy this adapter for the output side of the pump. Regards this adapter specifically, it is a good quality pvc and threads both to the pump and garden hose without any problems. I have been using it now for three months without any issues. Last note: do yourself a favor and test the overall quality of your lake water (or source water). Water just a small part of your grass to see how the grass reacts to your lake water before using the lake water on your entire lawn. The water may be high in certain chemicals or fertilizers which will harm new grass. Especially if your laying sod or new/over seeding and counting on using lake water. Most lakes are polluted with runoff from fertilizers and over fertilizing new grass seed or sod may be harmful. Lake water is usually not harmful for established lawns. They are not that fragile. Good luck!

This is THE adapter!
I bought the wrong thing. This was not what I wanted, but it’s what I needed. I got to say, this has MANY uses. I think it is made quite well and it currently sits on my shelf as a conversation piece. It’s helped me improve my life significantly just by admiring the construction and applying those same principles to my life. Be the adapter you wish you were!
