Q: How do you open the case it comes in?

Just push in and lift. Not the side with the hinges, the other side. It may take a little effort.

Q: How well does the 3x magnification actually work?

I don’t think it worked well at all. I looked in my daughter’s ear and my husband’s ear, and both were just a fuzzy blur. I ended up just shelling out $$$ for a real otoscope from an audiology supply company. Not cheap but it actually works.
